Have you ever wondered how trees function? How they transport food and water, produce fruits and vegetative matter, how they withstand some condition and dry away in winters? The thing is, trees have heartbeat too. They breathe and live just like us humans but their heartbeat is so slow that it could not be detected for a long time. Recently I read an article which mentioned some scientists and researchers found out that trees have heartbeat too.
They mentioned that Trees may seem quiet and sedate but it turns out they are more active than we thought. The findings hint that the trees actively pump water upwards in stages as they as they actively move their branches up and down during the night. It is said that trees do not have a very prominent heartbeat but have been discovered to show a slower version or something like a human’s pulse.
And this isn’t just a theory as many people are suspicious about these facts that trees are mainly awake during the night time. Many travelers and the people who stay near the forests and maybe in the forests who have their tree house and farm houses etc. have stated this. Also it is obvious that many trees release carbon dioxide at night thus their systems are obviously functioning well.
Also trees need water to be transported in their steams nd branches through the roots which is called as transpiration, and this process I done during the day light as everything thought. This process is done during the day light as plants need water to photosynthesize glucose, and photosynthesis can only be occurred during the day light in the presence of the sun. But after searching and researching people found of that it is a much more complex process as to put it in words.
Plants and trees have tracheids the way we have veins. But tracking the moment of water through these tracheids is not that easy. But there obviously are different ways to find out what is going in the system of trees. During the night time as I said earlier, trees move and lower their branches up to 10 centimeters till the sun rises the next day. The process is just so slow and subtle that isn’t very recognizable and people thought that only some species of trees do this, but after learning more about this we feel this is a very widespread topic.
Dr András Zlinszky a researcher at Aarhus University, Denmark, used a laser scanning technique to measure the exact location of branches and leaves of 22 tree and shrub species. He published the observations last year and found of unexpected movements in the trees and moving cycles. They stated that they detected a previously unknown cycle in two hours. The unusual movements has to be connected to something, it could be related to water pressure inside the plants by which he started that the water is pumped through the roots nd then circulated to the other parts of the plant. This effectively tells us that the tree is pumping although water transport is not a steady flow as it was previously mentioned.
Many of you all must be now wondering on how really do trees have heartbeat and how did the scientists find out about this. This is really simple as people in general are always curious about many things around us, and basically people like scientists and researchers who have immense amount of knowledge are willing to find out more and more. The more effectively they do the research, the more they would be successful and have a name in new articles. Such researchers do have vast knowledge and try to gain more knowledge by finding out more. And as such everyone knows trees perform photosynthesis in the sunlight during the day time, and throw out oxygen in the morning and suck cmup carbon dioxide and vice versa during the night time, this obviously has to have some pumping mechanism which the trees perform by transportation of water by pumping it from the roots to the branches by shaking their branches during the night time. This is just a gist and a small summary of the above article. But now I want to talk about the methods of finding out this.
Scientists have discovered to find out the subtle heartbeat of the plants and shrubs using terrestrial laser scanning to measure the overnight movements of the branches and stems. Also it’s been long known that trees and shrubs in legume family have a distinct ‘sleep cycle,’ and move their leaves overnight. Also it has been known and I had mentioned above that trees move their branches in a lower direction, they almost move 10 cm in the lower direction before coming back to their normal state in the morning. This happens very gradually and slowly, this is not visible with the naked eye. Things like some instruments can only detect such type of movements.
And now in the recent discovery which is a surprise discovery scientists and researchers found out that many trees or almost all the trees do this. According to the researchers, all of the trees experienced minute branch movement, though only seven species showed ‘sleep motion.’
Many Indian scientists and researchers have also worked on this, but they do not have any prominent theory yet, but I believe something will surely come out sooner or later in the future. Trees are after all living creatures like us, they also have a lot of complex functions for each of the tasks they do, and people would not deny the fact that they would have a heartbeat too. Also the surveys and experiments conducted by Dr András Zlinszky a researcher based from Hungary did the research about this topic about an year ago which would be around 2018 or 2019 and we have a lot more years to discover and grow in this field. And I am sure we would find out something very positive and very interesting about this research in the future days.
